Two aldermen missed a Wednesday deadline to sign an Illinois Municipal League “civility pledge” before the Springfield City Council.

Ald. Roy Williams said, “It’s just fluff.” Ald. Shawn Gregory chose not to comment. Both texted WTAX News in response to a request for comment.

“I can’t imagine not wanting to sign a document stating we want to treat each other with civility,” Mayor Misty Buscher said after Tuesday’s council meeting. “That doesn’t make any sense to me. We don’t all have the same opinions. We all have different political backgrounds. That’s just life, but you should still treat people with civility, and that’s what that ordinance is about.”

Buscher, city clerk Frank Lesko, city treasurer Colleen Redpath Feger, and the other eight aldermen did sign the pledge.
