Aldermen have set up a busy night next Tuesday.
They’ll again take up the measure of how much in utility bills the mayor can forgive without taking it to the council. The proposal is for a $50,000 threshold of debt and comes from the Wyndham Hotel’s forgiveness of about $250,000.
Ald. Ralph Hanauer is upset with what the city’s been doing.
“This is about (the question of) do we forgive debt,” said Hanauer. “Before, we sent it to debt collection. That’s what it’s about, and right now, we don’t. We have people, we set up payment plans. If they don’t pay, then it goes to debt collection. If it gets written off because of that, that’s just how it goes.”
The council next week will also consider the latest plan to save the Wyndham – there was no presentation Tuesday because two council members were absent. The deal would allow 200 apartments in addition to 250 hotel rooms in the downtown tower.
