Almost $2 million in new funding has been secured to help clean up and demolish the buildings on the old Pillsbury Plant site in Springfield. Chris Richmond with Moving Pillsbury Forward, on the WTAX Morning Newswatch, says the USEPA will be providing nearly $800,000 in grant money to help with remediation and removal of hazardous materials like asbestos and lead paint.

An additional $1.2 million is included in the new state budget. This money, Richmond says, will be used primarily to continue demolition activities on the site. Moving Pillsbury Forward now has financial commitments of over $6 million for $10 million project.  Richmond says they are working on a required environmental survey and plan to put out a proposal for bids in the fall for demolition contractors.  He says demo could get underway in winter.
