Springfield, IL (capitolcitynow.com) – Reading scores would hopefully go up in District 186 with a change in literacy curriculum approved Monday night.
“This is a big course correction from balanced literacy more science based which i think everybody is looking forward to do we believe there are enough opportunities built in for professional development becayse it’s a lot for teachers to have to change from,” said board president Micah Miller.
“We don’t feel like we have enough currently,” responded Nicole Moody, assistant superintendent for teaching, learning, and school culture, “and we have already been talking to our finance dept to add particularly what our classroom teachers are asking for.”
It leads up to all manner of communication, including reading for pleasure.
“I’m reading a book called The Maid. It’s kind of a mystery.” said superintendent Jennifer Gill. “I’m enjoying it. It’s interesting in that the main character has a lot of quirks. She is a cleaning lady at a large hotel, and there is a mystery behind that, what is going on at the hotel,”
She usually has some kind of professional-related book going, too.
