A new measure of safety is coming to District 186 schools.

The board Monday approved an agreement with Centegix for ID badges with buttons the wearer can use to send an alert about an emergency – from a gunman in the classroom to a medical emergency.

“They also do safety blueprinting, which is a dynamic, digital site-mapping program,” superintendent Jennifer Gill told the school board, “that really helps with first responders, or anybody who needs access to the building, whether it be police or fire or emergency services of any kind.”

Put another way, responders will get an exact location of where to go.

The badges are expected to be ready by fall. The cost is $2 million over five years.
