With the governor’s signature Tuesday night, Illinois is now the ninth state to ban assault weapons.

Sponsoring State Rep. Bob Morgan (D-Deerfield), like everyone else, expects a court challenge:

“The constitutional interpretation of the Second Amendment, of course, looms large over the drafting of this legislation,” said Morgan. “Both chambers took that very seriously. We have to make sure we are passing laws that can stand. There are a lot of legal threats that came, and we look forward to being able to make those arguments in court.”

An assurance that this is not a gun grab failed to move opponents who say the new law tramples the Second Amendment.
