One person has died in a multi-vehicle crash in northwest Springfield Friday afternoon.

The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 4500 block of North Walnut Road around 1:12 p.m. The site is in the northwest corner of Springfield, just south of the Sangamon River bridge.

According to our news partners at WAND TV, a 911 call stated that there was a traffic crash involving three vehicles, with one on fire.

At the scene, emergency personnel discovered that the vehicle on fire was occupied. The driver of that vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. Sangamon County Coroner, Jim Allmon, confirmed that the driver was an 18-year-old man from Menard County. His identity is being withheld pending next of kin notification.

Drivers of the other two vehicles involved were taken by ambulance to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Unit is investigating the crash.

Springfield Fire, Sherman Fire and Police, Illinois State Police, the Sangamon County Coroner’s Office, Lifestar Ambulance, and Springfield Area Ambulance were all on scene to assist.
