A social media trend showing folks how to start Hyundai and Kia vehicles without a key has led to an increase in thefts.
To try to combat this the Springfield Police Department has partnered with Hyundai Motors to donate free steering wheel locks to Hyundai and Kia vehicle owners.
The giveaway is at Scheels on S. MacArthur on Saturday from 10AM to Noon.
A nationwide increase was seen in Hyundai and Kia vehicle thefts particularly those built before November 1, 2021, without an engine immobilizer. The vehicles effected by this are Hyundai and Kia’s that require a steel key to be started.
The steering wheel locks will be free and distributed on a first come first serve basis to Springfield residents who have vehicle models meeting the criteria. Vehicle owners will need to provide registration to verify ownership of a Hyundai or Kia in order to receive a free steering wheel lock.
There will also be Ferris wheel rides, a donut board, juice boxes, and additional safety items and information.
Recruiters will also be on hand for anyone interested in a career with the Springfield Police Department.
