In May, Sangamon County Correctional Officer Tom Ansell assisted medical responders in saving an inmate’s life by administering Narcan to reverse an overdose. As a result, Sheriff Jack Campbell says Ansell is being honored with the prestigious Overdose Revival Award from Advanced Correctional Healthcare. He says officers receive targeted training on responding to medical emergencies, and that training is the foundation for the heroic acts of Ansell and other staff. The National Commission on Correctional Healthcare says overdoses from drugs and alcohol are the third leading cause of inmate death.
