A preliminary damage assessment is underway as the City of Springfield provides details to the US Small Business Administration, IEMA, and FEMA regarding the damage done by the derecho in June. According to the assessment, the city anticipates incurring costs in the millions for storm response with the largest expenses from City, Water, Light and Power for restoring power and fixing damaged infrastructure. The second largest agency cost is anticipated from Public Works for emergency protective measures and clean-up, according to Mayor Misty Buscher’s office. The assessment will help pave the way for federal assistance to aid in recovery and rebuilding efforts.
