Tax time is here. Because April 15 is a Saturday, and because of a Monday holiday in Washington, D.C., the due date this year is Tuesday, April 18.

State revenues continue to outpace expectations, says Illinois Department of Revenue director David Harris. He has an answer for those who do not believe the state’s economic report is genuine.

“All they have to do is talk to their local officials because it’s not just the state that’s benefited from the increased revenue; it’s also the locals, because the money that comes in is shared with the locals via the Local Government Distributive Fund,” he said.

That fund, by the way, used to dole out ten percent of state income tax revenues to municipalities and now shares close to two-thirds that. Getting back to ten percent would be another story, an annual request of the Illinois Municipal League.

Harris says if you have not filed your taxes yet, the easiest thing to do is file electronically.

And don’t forget to sign your return.
