The Illinois Department of Agriculture and Illinois Department of Public Health says while they are monitoring dairy herds for the H5N1 influenza virus, so far they have not seen any cases in Illinois livestock.
Eight states have had confirmed detection of the flu virus. Ag Department Veternarian Mark Ernst says what they’re seeing in other states in those livestock populations is that animals are recovering with very low mortality rates.
Both agencies are working with producer groups and partner organizations to coordinate prevention and response measures.
Effective Monday, the U.S.D.A. is requiring the testing of dairy cattle for interstate movement as well as mandatory reporting of positive results to limit the virus’ spread.
