New research from the University of Illinois Springfield says gun violence is going up in cities of all sizes.
Magic Wade, an associate professor of political science and director of the university’s School of Politics and International Affairs, says 42 percent of firearm homicides are in communities with populations short of 250,000, and more than two thirds of the nation’s most violent cities have not even 100,000 residents.
“Chicago, actually, isn’t experiencing the highest murder rate it’s ever had,” Wade says. “What’s really new is that smaller cities and mid-sized cities are experiencing heightened violence driven by firearm violence. They don’t have the resources and the infrastructure to address that, so it’s a serious problem that we need to pay more attention to.”
