Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – For the 80th year, young people from across Illinois and even the nation took part in the annual Lincoln Pilgrimage.

Around 600 scouts and their supporters trekked from the Lincoln Tomb to the Old State Capitol on Sunday afternoon.

Clear skies and mild temps made for a pleasant afternoon’s march.

It was part of a weekend full of events including a 20-mile hike from New Salem State Park near Petersburg to Springfield on Saturday. Only the older kids were allowed to participate in that event.

Scouts were also able to visit many other Lincoln sites including the ALPLM and the Lincoln Home.

Jerry Daniels with Scouting America’s Abraham Lincoln Council says they welcome scouts from as far away as Florida and California who want to participate.

He also talked about welcoming girls into the scouting adventure, hence the name change from Boys Scouts to Scouting America. Daniels says the boys welcomed the girls and they seem to enjoy a bit of friendly competition from time to time.
