Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – You do know by now to move over, right?
If a car is by the side of the road with its hazard lights on, or if a first responder is parked there with its emergency lights on, slow down and, if it’s safe, move over.
Now Illinois State Police will be able to notify some drivers when they are about to encounter such a situation.
“New technologies which give motorists advance warning will undoubtedly save lives and enhance officer safety,” said Trooper Alex Womack, “as well as the public’s safety.”
In 2019, Womack broke several bones when a trucker didn’t move over. That driver rear-ended Womack’s parked squad car, which hit him and sent him flying.
State police Wednesday announced a partnership with Haas Alert, which manufactures an alert system. For now, drivers of Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Volkswagen, and Mercedes-Benz vehicles equipped with a smart infotainment system will receive the messages.
