Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – A teenager charged with killing a Southeast High School student this spring is being charged as an adult.

Sangamon County State’s Attorney John Milhiser says Cordae Curb, 16. is the second person charged in the April 24 shooting death of Keyon Day near the school. Milhiser says Curb, who was fifteen when Day was killed, was the driver of a stolen vehicle from which Dremone Patterson fatally shot Day. Patterson was sixteen at the time and is automatically transferred to adult court.

Charges against Curb are first degree murder under accountability, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a firearm by a street gang member, and obstructing justice. Milhiser, who says Curb can be charged with the killing even though he is not the alleged gunman, tried to dispose of the gun, hence the obstruction charge.

A Milhiser news release quotes the state’s attorney as saying, “Violent crime committed by anyone in our community, including juveniles, will be aggressively investigated and prosecuted. We will continue to work closely with law enforcement to protect our neighborhoods from those that seek to cause harm.”

The same news release quotes Springfield police chief Ken Scarlette: “With the summer months upon us, we are laser-focused on keeping our streets safe and will continue to work with our partners to identify and investigate violent crime.”

Curb appeared in court Monday to face the charges and transfer. His next court appearance is June 24.
