(CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Illinois secretary of state Alexi Giannoulias says Texas is using license plate reader information from Illinois to try to determine who is getting a legal abortion here.
“We cannot allow outside entities to go after the personal data of law-abiding citizens so that they can identify, target, and punish people who may disagree with the policies of another state,” Giannoulias told a Chicago news conference Thursday. “They’re essentially weaponizing this technology against those seeking abortion care and immigrants who are protected under Illinois law.”
Law enforcement is able to access license plate reader records in the Chicago suburb of Mount Prospect. That system has been searched more than two hundred times in the first four months of this year for immigration-related reasons.
