Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Dozens of folks came from around the area to participate in the annual Lincoln Land Community College Honey Harvest.
The assembled included 35 Lanphier High School students who had built a hive last year and came to reap what they hope is a bountiful harvest of honey.
Their teacher, Laura Allen, says it’s a great opportunity for kids to get hands on experience working in the field as well as learn about biodiversity and the vital role bees play in human agriculture.
She says the kids look forward to putting on protective gear and having fun extracting the honey-and-bee-laden cells from the hive. Allen says they are looking forward to their ‘biscuit and honey’ party tomorrow.
Professor of Biology with LLCC, Dave Cox, oversees the event and he enjoys the opportunity to tell folks about all the amazing facts surrounding bees and honey production.
He says around 50,000 bees will produce 50 to 80 lbs. of honey over the year. He says honey will never spoil and has many health benefits including reduction in allergic reactions to pollen.
While many of the folks chose to wear protective gear, one seasoned hand said there is no need. He says bees can smell fear and if you’re not afraid of them, they’re not afraid of you. Just don’t get between their flight path and the hive!
Many civic and school groups will sponsor a hive structure. All they have to do is provide a 20 lb. bag of sugar and then decorate the hive if they so choose.
