Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Another area family has come forward with what they believed were their loved one’s ashes, but weren’t.
Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon confirmed to our news partners at WAND-TV a family brought in the ashes that they were given to them by Heinz Funeral Home in Carlinville.
An investigation has turned up more than 800 sets of human remains that were possibly misidentified by the funeral home. It started in 2023 after the coroner had been contacted by a local hospital regarding a body that had been in its morgue for more than month.
Legislation crafted by Sen. Doris Turner was later signed into law created an identification system for human remains, so nothing like that happens again.
