Springfield, IL  (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – An apartment complex on West Washington Street in Springfield is under the Illinois Attorney General’s microscope for violations that include asbestos.

City of Springfield Corporation Counsel Greg Moredock provided an update to the council at the request of Alderwoman Erin Conley and says the owner of the old Bally Vaughn apartment complex has been in touch with an asbestos remediation company.

Once the asbestos is out, Moredock says “we can resume pursuing all of the remedies that we have for the situation.”

The current owner started rehabbing the apartments, according to Conley, and failed to do an asbestos inspection. She said, “Neighbors have been more than patient with what has become an outrageous, obnoxious violation.”

The owner, per Moredock, is within the two-week window to present an asbestos abatement plan to the Attorney General’s Office and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.
