Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Illinoisans of certain cultures could soon be able to – legally – scatter someone’s ashes in a river. The bill only applies to people whose backgrounds include this custom. Sen. Laura Ellman (D-Naperville) said constituents asked her to sponsor the bill.

“My district has got a lot of people from South Asia, from India and Pakistan and countries in that area,” Ellman said, “and this is actually a tenet of the Hindu faith.”

Of course, even if the bill becomes law, there is not much to stop just anyone from dumping ashes into a river – or, for that matter, other places.

“Actually, somebody did talk about Wrigley Field when this question came up,” said Ellman. “The only thing that would be stopping anybody … would be the presence of somebody who catches them doing it.”

The bill has passed the Senate Executive Committee.
