Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The Illinois Poison Center Medical Director Dr. Michael Wahl discussed summer pool chemical safety with Joey McLaughlin on the WTAX Morning NewsWatch.
The Illinois Poison Center gets over 200 calls every year from people having issues with the chlorine in their pools.
Dr. Wahl states that when it comes to outdoor pools the most common calls received when chlorine levels are too high are people experiencing dry itchy skin, especially those who have psoriasis or eczema, and red or burning eyes. When it comes to indoor pools, people with asthma can have severe shortness of breath because of chlorine gas, which occurs when chlorine mixes with urine. When this gets into the air and a person breathes it, Dr. Wahl states this causes coughing, wheezing, and pretty significant chest pains.
Dr. Wahl recommends always using the chlorine as directed, ensuring there isn’t too much in the pool, and making sure to check pH levels to ensure they are in the appropriate range.
Dr. Wahl also states if you’ve been exposed the best thing to do is to shower or rinse off. If that does not work, call the poison center at 1-800-222-1222. There are nurses and pharmacists available to speak with you.
