Springfield, ILĀ  (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Guilty was the verdict handed down Wednesday by a Sangamon County jury for Jared Staake in the shooting of a Springfield man. Evidence presented at trial showed Staake, wearing a mask, approached Jeremy Evans outside his home in March of 2023 and shot him twice in the leg.

Two Springfield Police Department detectives testified Staake was identified through surveillance footage and witness interviews, including an interview with a co-defendant.

Sangamon County State’s Attorney John Milhiser’s office reports testimony indicated Staake attempted to conceal evidence of the crime, including hiding the slide to a Glock 9mm, believed to the weapon used in the shooting.

Staake was convicted on two counts, armed violence and aggravated battery with a firearm. He was found not guilty on the lesser charge of attempted armed robbery.

Sentencing is set for October 8. Staake faces 15 to 30 years in prison.
