Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The assistant police and fire chiefs in Springfield are Mayor Misty Buscher’s picks to take over the top spots in each department.
Buscher has chosen Nick Zummo, a 24-year veteran of the fire department, to replace Ed Canny. Zummo was named Springfield Firefighter of the Year in 2008 and received the Distinguished Service Award in 2017. He has also led critical emergency response operations and has been involved in several initiatives focused on firefighter safety, wellness, and policy development, according to Buscher.
“I’m honored and humbled by this opportunity to lead the Springfield Fire Department,” said Zummo. “This is a department built on courage, sacrifice, and service. I look forward to working alongside Captain Plunk and the entire SFD team as we continue to adapt, grow, and deliver exceptional service to the community.”
Joe Behl, who has served the police department for 18 years, will replace Ken Scarlette. Behl says he’s “committed to listening, leading compassionately, and ensuring every resident feels safe, supported, and respected.” Behl is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and has led several critical divisions, overseen major investigations, and played a central role in departmental strategy and development.
Both Canny and Scarlette announced their retirement in April. Both appointments are pending city council approval. Buscher will promote Captain Julie Plunk to assistant fire chief and Commander Ryan Leach to assistant police chief.
