Springfield, ILĀ  (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The Springfield Jaycees point to financial hardship as the reason for canceling this year’s Capital City Celebration.

For 17 years, the Jaycees have hosted fireworks and family-friendly activities at the Illinois State Capitol. The organization posted on social media Thursday, “Our chapter did not make this difficult decision lightly and we hold hope to revitalize this event in future years.”

Last year’s event was also canceled after a derecho moved through the area in the week prior to July 4.
