Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The community of Chatham, just south of Springfield, is still dealing with the horrific tragedy that claimed the lives of four young people in April, and one more earlier this month.

The incident has brought the town together in many ways and now Chatham Strong Fest is being announced for July 6th from 1pm to 9pm at the Chatham Community Park to remember and celebrate those killed or injured that day.

The day-long music event will feature 6 area bands, food trucks, adult and kids’ beverages, a silent auction and more.

Organizer, Jason Dolby, appearing on the WTAX Morning Newswatch, says the event is free to the public but funds will be raised through sponsorships and those funds will be donated to the Glenwood Student Council’s YNot Fund.  He says the monies will be handled by the Chatham Jaycees. Dolby says over $80 thousand dollars has already been committed by area businesses and organizations.

The crash happened around 3:20 p.m. on April 28 at YNOT Outdoors Summer and After School Camp, when a vehicle left the roadway, drove through a field and then plowed into the east side of the building, striking several people outside before driving through it and striking many inside. The vehicle eventually broke through the opposite side of the building and came to a stop.

Police have said initial toxicology results showed that the driver, 44-year-old Marianne Akers, was negative both for alcohol and controlled substances. Police say there is some evidence that points to a possible medical emergency leading up to the crash, but the investigation remains ongoing.
