Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Compass for Kids is receiving national recognition for Camp Compass, its summer learning program. The non-profit organization announced Monday that it is among 13 non-profits and municipalities to receive the honor as part of the U.S. Department of Education’s Engage Every Student program.
The camp, a partnership with District 186 and the United Way of Central Illinois, has over 1,000 campers enrolled this summer with over 315 employees, according to information provided by Compass for Kids.
The organization says Camp Compass is designed to prevent summer learning loss and improve reading and math skills. The goal is to reduce the gaps between low-income students and their higher-income peers. Data from Compass for Kids shows 98.2% of campers maintained or improved their literacy skills, 91.6% of campers improved or maintained their math skills, and 100% improved their social-emotional skills last year.
The organization’s Founder and CEO Molly Berendt and District 186 Director of School Leadership and Family and Community Engagement Terrance Jordan will attend the recognition reception and summit in Washington D.C. in July.
