Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Survivors of Sonya Massey – the Black Springfield woman shot and killed by a then-Sangamon County sheriff’s deputy last July – will receive a $10 million settlement, as voted unanimously by the county board Tuesday night.
The vote came after Joel Benoit, director of the civil division of the Sangamon County state’s attorney’s office, presented the settlement and said it was achieved with the help of a mediator.
The money will come from cash reserves.
“It’s no different from the way you approach your home or the way you approach your business,” said county administrator Brian McFadden, “as far as keeping something in reserve for the rainy day fund. As of right now, it’s raining, so we are going to tap into that rainy day fund.”
McFadden said the deal will cause the county to neither raise taxes, borrow money, nor cut services.
Massey called 9-1-1 to report a possible prowler. Before it was all over, then-deputy Sean Grayson fatally shot her in the face, saying he felt threatened by a pot of hot water she was holding. Grayson was fired, jailed, and charged with murder.
