SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – When Springfield Public Schools superintendent Terrance Jordan (pictured, left) looks at the Illinois Report Card, he wants to see one student, not 13,066.
“We look at individual kids,” he said. “You need to put a face with that data point.”
While some numbers on the report card are still low, Jordan said the district wants to celebrate the progress, not the numbers. For example, in grades 3-8, reading proficiency is 39 percent and math proficiency is 23 percent. Both are trending up, as is graduation. The district figure is 78 percent. Individually, Springfield High is at 87 percent, Southeast 75 percent, and Lanphier 72 percent.
Assistant superintendent Erica Filipiak (pictured, right) joined Jordan to brief local news reporters this week. While both say there is room for improvement, Filipiak said the report card “is only one piece of the overall puzzle. These are certain academic sets of data. I can see several schools here that I know are doing amazing things with some new systems in place.”
The administrators will present the data to the school board Monday and post it online Tuesday.
