Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Springfield city clerk Frank Lesko, the man who said, “Hire me so you can fire me,” just may hold two jobs at once, effective Monday.
On Election Day, Nov. 5, Lesko was leading incumbent Sangamon County recorder Josh Langfelder by 68 votes. A count of provisional and mail-in ballots two weeks later whittled Lesko’s lead to 31. The election winners in Sangamon County are to be sworn in Monday. But Langfelder is seeking a discovery recount. And Lesko has not resigned.
Sangamon County clerk Don Gray said via text message Wednesday morning state law is silent on whether the two offices are compatible. He referred a WTAX News reporter to the attorney general’s office. Lesko did not respond to a text message Tuesday night.
The city council next week is due to consider an ordinance declaring a vacancy in the clerk’s office and naming a new clerk. Aldermen are fielding names of those interested. However, the council would not vote on the ordinance if Lesko does not resign.
Why not a special election? “Once a vacancy occurs, statute lays out when a special election would need to take place,” corporation counsel Greg Moredock told the council. “That would be if there’s at least 28 months remaining on the term and at least 130 days before the next general election. Our next general election is April 1. That’s not within 130 days, so there would be no election.”
Lesko campaigned for recorder saying, “Hire me so you can fire me,” promising to combine the offices of recorder and clerk.
