Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The commemoration of the end of slavery – a Black Independence Day or Freedom Day, if you will – is upon us. Two Black members of the Springfield city council brought up Juneteenth Tuesday night,
“Juneteenth is a powerful reminder of resilience, liberation, and the ongoing journey toward true freedom and equality,” said Ald. Lakeisha Purchase. “Juneteenth is just not about history; it’s about honoring the strength of our ancestors, celebrating Black culture and contributions and continuing to work for justice and equity today. So it’s both a celebration and a call to action.
“This is an example of all of us being able to be in the same room, whereas back in the day we couldn’t.”
Ald. Shawn Gregory also publicized the goings-on: “Thursday begins an eight-day celebration — an eight-day lineup of community education, engagement, and free entertainment.” While June 19 is the federal holiday, a centerpiece of the Springfield activities is a two-day celebration Saturday and Sunday at Comer Cox Park.
