Jacksonville, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Following a fire at the abandoned Jacksonville Developmental Center on Sunday morning, investigators found evidence of trespassing and signs of previous fires within the building. The Jacksonville Fire Department, along with help from the South Jacksonville Fire Department, responded to the fire around 7 a.m. and found smoke and flames coming from the second floor of the Gillespie Building.
Water tankers were needed to battle the blaze due to limited water availability at the site. No injuries were reported.
The fire remains under investigation. Authorities said the structure was found unsecured at the time of the fire, and the City of Jacksonville will work closely with the State of Illinois and Central Management Services to secure the grounds.
