Springfield, IL. (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Black Lives Matter SPI reports the family of Sonya Massey will meet with Illinois State Police Wednesday afternoon to view bodycam footage from the July 6 deputy-involved shooting.

The organization posted an invitation from the family on social media for the community to join them at 3 p.m. at the Springfield NAACP office at 801 S. 11th Street and “stand in solidarity” with the family and “get answers and justice.”

Tiara Standage, who is featured in the invitation, is the organizer of the wrongful death protest that began on Friday in front of the Sangamon County Building.

Preliminary autopsy reports released by Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon indicated Massey died from a gunshot wound, and she was transported from her home on Hoover Avenue by EMS to HSHS St. John’s Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 1:47 a.m.

Information released the morning of the shooting by Sangamon County Communications Director Jeff Wilhite indicated deputies were dispatched to the 2800 block of Hoover Avenue in response to a report of a prowler. Deputies reported shots had been fired at approximately 1:21 a.m. resulting in Massey being struck by gunfire.
