Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – For the second straight day, there’s an update from the family and legal team of Sonya Massey, the Springfield woman shot to death by a now-former Sangamon County deputy. Three things came out of Tuesday’s news conference. The U.S. Department of Justice is on the case, Gov. JB Pritzker and Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton met with the family, and family and friends said law enforcement provided inaccurate information after the shooting.
Jimmie Crawford, Jr, a friend of Sonya Massey and father of one of her children, spoke at the news conference. Crawford said a friend that works at the hospital heard police officers telling the nurses that Massey killed herself.
Attorney Ben Crump’s office provided the following link to dispatch audio from the call to Massey’s home on July 6.
Crump said the family was not told the truth at the very beginning. Instead, he said they were told it appeared to be from an intruder or the gunshot wound was self-inflicted. “We want this matter to be cleared up and to be investigated, so the family can have answers to how certain things unfolded.”
So far, no decision has been made on a civil lawsuit.
