Riverton, IL (WAND) – For weeks, Comcast subcontractors have been in Riverton, adding new lines and boxes for their service. But several community members say they have had issues with the work they are doing.

Alex Hafliger has lived in Riverton since he was a child, and recently purchased a home in his childhood neighborhood. He came home from work to an unwanted surprise.

“There was not any effort made at all to notify us that this was going to be happening,” Haflinger said. “About three and a half weeks ago, I came home from work, [and] as we’re pulling up, the street is obliterated. There’s holes dug two, three feet deep and put in every yard up and down the street. The yards are all displaced. There’s dirt everywhere.”

His neighbor down the street, Ronald Thompson, experienced something similar.

“I didn’t know they would go up in my yard with their machine and start boring holes,” Thompson said. “It’s my understanding that anything on the curbside of my sidewalk is easement for the city, and whatever is on the other side is my property. So why is it on my property?”

Haflinger said a family member tried to talk to one of the crew members and ask if anything would be done to fix their lawn, and they were hostile in return. They did not answer her question.

Thompson said he saw someone drive a large piece of equipment within a yard of a home. Haflinger had equipment parked in his yard for five days.

When Haflinger reached out to village board members and attempted to contact the Village President, he was told that nothing could be done unless the situation got worse.

WAND News met with Village President Joe Bartley, who said they have been talking to Comcast about the issues.

“Every time we get a complaint, we call them and or we get a hold of the work supervisor and forward it on and try to get them in there,” Bartley said. “We are going to stay on top of it and we’re going to hold Comcast and their subcontractors accountable to make sure it’s done right and restored to the way it was before.”

WAND News reached out to Comcast regarding the concerns, and the company sent the following response:

“We are actively engaging with Village officials today to address the concerns that have been raised. We are fully committed to working collaboratively with local leadership and all construction partners to ensure these matters are resolved in a safe, responsible manner.”
