Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – There’s a big day Saturday at the Henson Robinson Zoo.
The Zoo is bringing back “Doctor Doolittle Day,” in honor of the fictional character, and what he was.
“The whole Doctor Doolittle Day concept is not only a free day, which is most important to the public — get into our amazing zoo for free,” said Emily Watts, Springfield Zoological Society, on the WTAX Morning Newswatch. “But, we’re also celebrating veterinarians and a bunch of other animal-related careers.”
That means a number of guest speakers in those fields.
“We’ll hear from (zoo) director Doug Hotle. He’s going to give an animal program. And, in the afternoon, he’s going to speak about his career and how he became a zoo director,” said Robert Pinkston, Springfield Zoological Society. “We’re going to have Jessica Prumm, who’s our education facilitator. She’s going to speak in the afternoon. At 11:30, we’re going to have a veterinarian speak. She’s very well-known for being a very good speaker, very engaging.”
That’s in addition to other speakers, story time, food trucks, and more. Watts says she hopes that working with animals will become more than just a passing fancy for the kids attending.
“There are so many kids that get excited about it when they’re young. They see the animals, and that’s all they want to do is interact with them.” said Watts. “One thing we’ve learned while planning this event is that there is a huge shortage in the veterinary field. One thing we’re hoping to do with this event is to really increase that passion with kids, and give them the opportunity to speak with people who have grown up and who have been able to accomplish these careers.
“Doctor Doolittle Day” at Henson Robinson Zoo is Saturday from 10am to 5pm.
