Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) — Two agencies say the price of gasoline in Illinois is declining, and did prior to Independence Day, as one of the agencies projected.

According to GasBuddy.com, the average price for a gallon of unleaded in Illinois was $3.39, declining 7.5 cents per gallon in the last week, but still 5.9 cents higher than a month ago.  Prices throughout Illinois range from $2.45 a gallon, to $4.49 a gallon.

AAA, meanwhile, has its statewide average at $3.41 a gallon, declining in recent days.

GasBuddy’s price map of the Springfield area hasn’t moved much from a week ago, with prices ranging from $2.94 a gallon in the southwest, to $3.29 in the northeast area.  AAA’s Sangamon County gas price average currently sits at $3.21.

“Nearly every state saw average gas prices decline for the second straight week, even as the nation celebrated July 4 with the lowest national average for Independence Day since 2020,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, in a news release. “That downward momentum may continue, as OPEC’s weekend decision to boost production by a larger-than-expected 548,000 barrels per day in August adds further pressure to oil prices— potentially accelerating supply builds. If tensions in the Middle East remain contained and the Gulf is spared from major hurricanes, the odds are improving that the national average could dip below $3 per gallon later this summer, but in the meantime we could see the national average falling to its lowest summer level since the pandemic.”

AAA’s national gas price average is at $3.14 a gallon, while GasBuddy’s is at $3.09.
