Chicago, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Burdensome.

That’s how Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias describes a new $45 fine the feds want to impose starting February first on travelers who don’t get Real ID or who have a passport.

Giannoulias says the cost for some trips could end up being almost too much.

“To put this in perspective, a one-way flight to Midway on Boston on Southwest alone can cost less than this new penalty,” said Giannoulias.  “For a family of four, that fee could total $180.  And, if the trip lasts longer than ten days, it could jump to $360, just to get through airport security.”

So, Giannoulias says his online Real ID portal has been streamlined, so it’s easier to determine what documents you need to upgrade your drivers license or state ID, in order to get Real ID.

He also says there’s a new telephone hotline operated similarly.  You can call 1-800-252-8980.  Real ID services are available at most DMV centers, including the flagship center on Dirksen Parkway in Springfield.

Some other initiatives are more specific to the Chicago area, including efforts with the Cook County Clerk, and a so-called “Real ID Supercenter” in Chicago remaining open until the end of 2026.
