(CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The Illinois Secretary of State’s office denied 335 vanity and personalized license plate requests in 2024 for being offensive, inflammatory, or simply hard to read.
In total, Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias said his office received 60,537 applications for custom plates last year, but some combinations didn’t make the cut. Among the rejected requests were plates reading HOKTUAH, GYATT, MUNCH, BICHIN, JAGWEED, BADARSE, AXEHOLE, ILLCUTU, HOHOHOE, ABADMF, WEENIE, DUCKOFF, SHIDDED, UGEWANG, and THICCAF.
The Secretary of State’s office evaluates plate requests to ensure they meet standards of good taste and decency. Giannoulias said his team is well-versed in “lecherous language and sneaky swearing”, all of which are rejected and placed the permanent prohibited list.
The office has the authority to reject applications under state law, including those that reference expletives, racial slurs, sex, drugs, or violence. Plates that are too hard to read, like MWMWMWM or OOQQOO, are also flagged for rejection.
Illinois drivers pay and additional $94 for new vanity plates, which use all letters, and $47 more for personalized plates, which mix letters and numbers. Currently, 811,351 vehicles in the state sport custom plates. Most requests are submitted using the online Pick-a-Plate tool, which lets users check availability before applying.
