Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Illinois House Republicans hope to prevail in court over what they call continued gerrymandering – legislative maps drawn by supermajority Democrats. State Rep Dan Ugaste (pictured, center) (R-Geneva) says his argument is a simple one.
“Voters are supposed to pick their legislators,” said Ugaste. “Legislators aren’t supposed to pick their voters. And what gets voters excited? About nine years ago, 600,000 people signed a petition because they wanted change, and it was only the Supreme Court at that time – of which there is only one member left – that invalidated that constitutional amendment.
For both the previous General Assembly and the current one, Republicans hold forty seats to Democrats’ 78. This group says under a “fair map,” Republicans would have closer to fifty.
