Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The ex-cop accused of murdering Sonya Massey when he shot her in the face in her Springfield home last July wants to be out of jail while waiting for his trial to begin. That was a subject before the Illinois Supreme Court Wednesday.
Justices saw two pictures of Sean Grayson.
“This offense shows the defendant has a dangerous impulsiveness and a terrible lack of judgment that we cannot rely on conditions of release to mitigate,” said assistant attorney general Michael Cebula.
Grayson’s lawyer, Deborah Pugh, countered, “This is a 30-year-old man who has no history of violence on the job or off the job at any time. There is no evidence that he has ever engaged in anything like this previously.”
The two lawyers also had conflicting views on whether Grayson’s ownership of a home and lack of previous violent behavior were mitigating factors.
In an episode captured on Grayson’s partner’s body camera, Massey was holding a pot of hot water, which Grayson profanely ordered her to drop, threatening to shoot her otherwise, which he promptly did. Massey had called 9-1-1 to report a possible prowler.
The high court will rule later whether Grayson should be granted pre-trial release.
