(CAPITOL CITY NOW) – You might find them in your favorite convenience store or gas station – hemp derivatives packaged to look like chips or candy. And Gov. JB Pritzker wants to rein them in.
Pritzker says the bad actors are circumventing the laws which govern sales of cannabis. The products, he says, are dangerously intoxicating. The best-known derivative in them is delta-8.
“They’re untested and unregulated and are widely available and accessible to young people,” Pritzker said Friday at a Chicago news conference. “Those operating in this legal grey area do not share a commitment to the well-being of our children.”
The governor wants the House to pass a bill regulating the derivatives. The sponsor says while the products are dangerous for kids, they are not all that great for grown-ups, either.
“I know a few friends who have tried them, unfortunately, thinking that it’s a real product, and they were very intoxicated, to the point that they really couldn’t function,” said State Rep. Barbara Hernandez (D-Aurora). “They couldn’t do anything, and some of them ended up going to the hospital. This is why it is very important that we take action now.”
The bill, among other things, requires that delta-8 products be sold only in a dispensary.
Pritzker says it’s regulation, not a ban – a compromise. The bill has already passed the Senate, and the governor wants the House to take it up in the early-January lame duck session.
