Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – In the wake of the Sonya Massey shooting, a Community Healing and Listening Session is set for Monday. The event at Union Baptist Church at 1405 E. Monroe St. is being facilitated by the U.S. Department of Justice Community Relations Service.
Local law enforcement including the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office and City of Springfield Police Department will be on hand in addition to representatives from the Mayor’s Office, City Council, U.S. Attorney ‘s Office for the Central District of Illinois and the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office. Civil rights leaders from Springfield will also participate.
The DOJ Community Relations Service bills itself as “America’s Peacemaker for community conflicts and tensions arising from differences in race, color, and national origin.”
CRS was involved in community relations after the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor & George Floyd.
The free event runs from 6-8 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
