SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – ICE is reportedly in Springfield.

“The Springfield Police Department cannot and will not work with them,” said Ald. Jennifer Notariano toward the end of Tuesday’s city council meeting. She said the story has been on social media.

Julio Barrenzuela (pictured, second from left) described the complications this has brought to his life. “I have to carry my passport around as one of the tips that has been given in my Latino community,” said Barrenzuela, a Navy veteran and naturalized American citizen. “Latino families here are sharing emergency contacts, lawyers’ numbers, and plans for their children if a parent is detained the next few days.”

Barrenzuela continued, “These warnings are reaching my mother (and) a friend of mine, personally, who has had to see five members of their community detained over the past two days.”

Springfield police Tuesday evening did not respond to a request for comment.
