Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Reports continue to put Illinois near the top – for property taxes.

State Rep. Joe Sosnowski (pictured, right) (R-Rockford) says his legislation would help.

He’s filed a bill “which would put a cap on seniors’ total property tax increase, limiting it to one percent” and another to “extend that same type of protection to all homeowners of any age, anybody who has a general homestead exemption, to cap their total property tax increase, so the actual out-of-pocket amount (is limited to) three percent from the prior year.”

State Rep. Dan Ugaste (R-Geneva) has a proposal to actually reduce property taxes. 25 percent of each year’s state budget would be set aside for the state’s pension obligations.

“With whatever is left, which would be a little over five percent at this point, we would then give money directly to the school districts on a per-pupil basis,” said Ugaste. “For each dollar, then, that the school districts receive under this plan, they must lower their property tax levy.”
