Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Illinois Senate Republicans Tuesday took some whacks at Gov JB Pritzker over the state law that exempts local police from cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
State Sen. Andrew Chesney (R-Freeport) said Pritzker “has done everything but roll out the red carpet for illegal immigrants, all while tying the hands of law enforcement behind their back.
“It’s a master class on how not to govern.”
Said State Sen. Neil Anderson (R-Andalusia): “Gov Pritzker says he wants law enforcement to deport violent criminals and the undocumented, but that is, in fact, a lie. He knows that the law that he continues to support makes it virtually impossible for law enforcement to coordinate with immigration officials.”
The senators said Pritzker undermines police and embraces criminals. How is that a winning strategy for the governor? The senators said you’d have to ask him.
Alex Gough, press secretary for Gov. J.B. Pritzker, said, “The Illinois TRUST Act is compliant with federal law and does not prevent Illinois law enforcement officers from coordinating when a criminal warrant is presented, or it is otherwise required by federal law. The Senate Republicans could have easily used the time they wasted on political theater this morning to actually read the law, which was signed by the Republican governor they enabled for four years as they partnered to destroy our state. Had they done so, they would know full well what the law actually does.”
