Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – The Illinois Supreme Court has agreed to hear an appeal regarding the detention of Sean Grayson, who is facing first-degree murder charges in the shooting death of Sonya Massey. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court filed the allowance.

In late November, the 4th District Appellate Court ruled that Grayson’s detention was improper and ordered a review of his pretrial release conditions.

In December, Sangamon County State’s Attorney John Milhiser filed a petition requesting the Supreme Court review the appellate court’s decision. Milhiser released a statement at that time saying, ““Grayson has demonstrated he cannot comply with conditions and is a danger to the community after his inexplicable actions on July 6, 2024, when he shot Sonya Massey.”

Body-worn camera footage shows Grayson, a Sangamon County deputy at the time, shooting Sonya Massey after responding to a 911 call about a prowler at her home. Grayson has pleaded not guilty.
