Springfield, IL  (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Illinois wheat producers have approved a new check-off program. The vote passed with 207 in favor and 69 against. The Illinois Department of Agriculture announced the results Thursday.

The program will add a 1.5 cent fee for every bushel of wheat sold. That money will help support research, marketing, and production.

The check-off program is set to begin on Jan.1, 2026. A board will be elected in the fall to oversee the program.

IDOA Director Jerry Costello said, “The wheat check-off will foster continued growth, positioning Illinois as a global leader in wheat production.”

Illinois is the 11th largest wheat producer in the country, growing more than 60 million bushels last year.
