Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – It’s National CPR and AED Awareness Week.
Each year, more than 350,000 people experience out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in the U.S. and about 90% of them die. Locally, 3 lifeguards are being honored tonight for saving the life of a person at the Nelson Center last summer using CPR. You never know when you might need these skills.
Executive Director for the South and West Central Illinois Chapter of the Red Cross, Dawn Morris, paid a visit to the WTAX Morning NewsWatch to chat with Joey McLaughlin about how to get certified during National CPR + AED Awareness Week.
You can click here to visit the Red Cross website where you can get trained in as little as 30 minutes. Morris recommends refreshing your training every other year and also taking the full course. It will take longer but will give you more information and get you certified.
For some, the AED Machine seems a little scary, but the good news is it talks you through the process. Morris emphasized this is great for someone like her, who might have trouble keeping a clear mind a stressful situation.
