Springfield, IL (CAPITOL CITY NOW) – Get used to hearing the name Jeff Cox.

Cox is Mayor Misty Buscher’s choice to succeed Chuck Redpath as the Ward One alderman. “I think he deeply cares about his ward,” Buscher told WTAX News Friday evening. “He sat on the Lake Area Council board before, so he’s done some other volunteer work in his ward, so he deeply cares about his ward.”

Cox, an attorney, is vice president of compliance for a cannabis company. His career has included helping the Illinois Department of Agriculture launch the medical and adult-use cannabis programs, being an assistant Sangamon County state’s attorney, and bartending at D.H. Brown’s.

The nomination is on first reading at Tuesday’s council meeting, with a final vote as early as Feb. 18.

Buscher said sixteen people applied for the vacancy, but only twelve live in the ward.

The ward includes Springfield homes on Lake Springfield. Redpath resigned as alderman to become city clerk.
